Mormon Church tax exempt status challenged

Posted: Updated:

An effort to challenge the tax exempt status of the Mormon Church is launching in Hawaii.

A television ad paid for by a gay rights group as part of a campaign started in Utah back in January.

Organizers are asking for tips that would help them challenge the tax exempt status of the church with the Internal Revenue Service.

The Hawaii ad focuses on plans by the Church of Latter Day Saints to develop hundreds of acres of agricultural land at Malaekahana.

It features Laie resident Dawn Wasson who has long battled the church over kuleana land issues.

"Going all over the country and when we find out about potential tax fraud, we are going to be digging deep. We have a team of investigators and tax attorneys who are helping us with this as well as a good base of volunteers and we are getting a lot of information and we are going to take it to IRS," Fred Karger with Mormon Tips said.

The equal rights group plans to take its Mormon Tips campaign to Florida next.

It believes it may take a year or more compile a case against the church.
