HONOLULU - The voyaging canoe Hokule'a has reached Block Island, off of the Rhode Island coast, on Monday.
They were greeted by a member of the Narrangansett Indian tribe. Captain and Master Navigator Kalepa Baybayan offered a kahili on behalf of the crew. They also sought permission from the indigenous tribes of the area to dock the Hokule'a.
"I think you for the respect of coming and asking for permission. I don't remember the last time that's happened anywhere either, and it shows great respect," said Rocky Johnson of the Narrangansett Indian tribe.
Crews are scheduled to give tours of the Hokule'a on Tuesday. On Thursday, the Hokule'a will set sail for Mystic, Conn. -- weather permitting.
