Kahoolawe funding approved by lawmakers

Posted: Updated:

Lawmakers are poised to give the Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission some much needed funds to keep operating.

Conference Committees today approved a bill that will give the commission 450-thousand dollars.

With federal funding drying up, the Commission has cut back on salaries and eliminated some positions.

The bill goes to votes before the full house and senate next.

Commission Executive Director Michael Nahoopii says the money will go to help upkeep their boat and to pay for the boat crew--- which is crucial for operations.

The boat is the lifeline that carries not only staff but volunteers to the island.
