Paula Akana's Keiki Hula Memories

Smiles ... Laughter ... And Tears

Paula Akana, KITV4 News Anchor

When the children take the stage at the Blaisdell for the Queen Lili'uokalani Keiki Hula Competition, I can't help but smile. Smiles, laughter and tears. To watch the dedication of these young people is inspiring.

Smile -- because each and every one of the young dancers are adorable.

Laughter -- because every once in a while, one dancer will go one way while the next will go in the other direction.

Tears -- because they are carrying on the Hawaiian culture with so much dedication and determination.

I remember my first Keiki Hula Competition, and the enthusiasm of the young men as they proudly danced and chanted on stage. They were little, but boy, were they loud in voice! And so animated! That is what makes this event so much fun!

Over the years, the dancing, and the use of the Hawaiian language has continued to impress me (and so many others watching the event). The dedication and skills of the youngsters will amaze you.

I hope you will enjoy the Queen Liliuokalani Keiki Hula Competition. Aloha.
