Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew said the team tabled discussions with two-time All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh until after the 2014 season, but they remain focused on keeping Suh in Detroit.
"We have the formula for getting a guy signed," Mayhew said Monday. "We have a player that wants to be here; we have a team that wants to keep the player. Those are the two most important things."
Suh said he likes playing for the Lions, but did not want to comment on the contract negotiations ending.
"It wasn't my decision," Suh said. "I'm not going to talk about my contract. We're going to continue to talk about football."
--Wide receiver Golden Tate, the Lions' top free-agent signee, was taken off the active physically unable to perform list in time to practice Monday, the first day of training camp.
--Linebacker Kyle Van Noy, the second-round pick, missed most of practice after suffering a thumb injury, but said he hopes to return to practice Tuesday.
--Quarterback Matthew Stafford, on ESPN's Mike & Mike radio show Monday morning, said the Lions "absolutely" have no excuses not to have a better offense this year.
"I totally agree with that, and I think our biggest challenge right now is learning the new offense and making sure we master it," Stafford said.
--Running back Mikel Leshoure, the fourth-year back, had some reps with the first team Monday, though he's still behind Joique Bell and Reggie Bush. Leshoure thinks he can play more this season with a new coaching staff.
"I feel like I'll get a role somewhere," he said.
--Offensive tackle Corey Hilliard earned first-team reps at right tackle Monday. He's in a competition with second-year tackle LaAdrian Waddle, and the two will likely split first-team reps moving forward.
--Wide receiver Kevin Ogletree is competing for one of the final receiver spots, and he played great with the first and second teams Monday, making multiple catches and running crisp routes.
