The Western Athletic Conference on Monday named University of Hawaii linebacker Blaze Soares the top defensive player of the week.

Soares recorded 12 tackles in the Warriors' 24-17 win over Navy on Saturday. The star linebacker also sacked Navy's quarterback on the last play of the game.

The WAC honor is the senior's first of his career. Soares leads the team with 96 tackles and two sacks.

UH faces Wisconsin on Saturday in a must-win game to earn a berth to the Hawaii Bowl.

The WAC also honored Utah State running back Robert Turbin and Boise State kick returner Titus Young as the offensive and special teams players of the week.
