GAME NOTES: Still looking to capture their first victory, the Miami-Ohio RedHawks will host the Toledo Rockets this Saturday afternoon in a Mid- American Conference battle at Yager Stadium. The Rockets fell to 4-4 in their last contest, as the Temple Owls disposed of Toledo, 40-24. It was the second loss in the last three games for Toledo, which is now an even 2-2 in league action. Two of the wins for the Rockets have come on the road this year, but from 2006 to 2008 the Rockets posted a mere 3-14 ledger away from home. As for the RedHawks, nothing has gone right for the team, as Miami-Ohio has dropped its first eight matchups on the season. Two of the RedHawks eight setbacks have come at home, and that includes the team's most recent loss, a 27-22 setback to Northern Illinois. Since 2008 the RedHawks have dropped 13 consecutive games and in MAC play the team is just 1-11 since the beginning of last year. The RedHawks hold a 28-20-1 edge over Toledo in the all-time series, but the Rockets posted a 42-14 victory over Miami-Ohio is last year's matchup. The Rockets love to air it out, as the team is averaging an impressive 304.9 ypg through the air. 19 of the team's 29 touchdowns have come via the pass, and overall this unit is producing 29.1 ppg. A large reason for the success of the passing attack has been quarterback Aaron Opelt, who has completed 60.0 percent of his throws for 1,784 and 14 touchdowns against five interceptions. However, Opelt has been dealing with a sore shoulder and has missed the last two matchups, and is questionable for this weekend. Backup Austin Dantin has also struggled with injury, so Alex Pettee was under center for the Rockets in the team's recent loss against Temple. Pettee was a tad inconsistent in the loss, throwing for 265 yards and one score, but was also intercepted twice and sacked two times. The ground game was even worse in the loss, as the Rockets rumbled for just 48 yards on 2.1 yards per attempt. DaJuane Collins led the way with 59 yards and one touchdown, and now how a team-best 651 yards and seven scores on 6.1 ypc. With the scoring prowess of the offense, the Rockets would be a tenacious force in the MAC if not for the play of the defense. The Rockets are currently being hammered for 38.2 ppg on 423.5 total ypg. The defense has played poorly against the run and pass, as opponents are punishing Toledo for 188.5 ypg on the ground, while torching Toledo for another 235.0 ypg through the air. The Rockets have been unable to help themselves out with turnovers or big plays, as the team has collected just 15 takeaways and 14 sacks on the year. The Rockets inability to stop run continued in their loss to Temple, as the Owls pounded Toledo for 211 yards and three touchdowns on 4.1 yards per carry. Overall the Rockets surrendered 343 total yards, and allowed Temple to convert on 6-of-15 third down attempts and 5-of-6 red zone chances. The RedHawks have struggled on offense, as the team is averaging a mere 11.6 ppg behind an equally poor 316.0 total ypg. The ground game has been shut down completely, as the team is managing just 71.4 ypg on a mere 2.3 yards per attempt. If the team has found success anywhere it has been with its passing attack, but Zac Dysert has been a tad inconsistent on the season. The quarterback has thrown for 1,388 yards since taking over as the starter for Daniel Raudabaugh, but has just seven touchdowns against 11 interceptions. Surprisingly the RedHawks were able to score 22 points in their last contest, but despite the solid offensive outburst the team still fell to NIU. The ground game was held to minus 11 yards on the ground, so once again it was the passing attack that had to carry this unit. Dysert had probably his best outing on the year, as the quarterback threw for 348 yards and three touchdowns on 27-of-37 passes. The main target for Dysert was Armand Robinson, who hauled in two touchdowns to go along with 123 yards on seven receptions. Along with the poor play offensively, the defense for Miami-Ohio has also struggled tremendously, as the team is surrendering 34.4 ppg on 370.2 total ypg. The team is allowing 193.1 ypg through the air, but the real problem for this team has been its inability to stop the run, as opponents are gashing Miami-Ohio for 177.1 ypg on the ground. This unit has been unable to help itself out when it matters most, as foes have converted on 44 percent of their third down chances, and 84 percent of their red zone opportunities. Miami- Ohio's troubles against the run continued in the team's recent setback to Northern Illinois, as the RedHawks were gashed for 202 yards and two touchdowns on 5.2 yards per attempt. The defense allowed NIU to convert on 5- of-11 third down chances and both of its red zone attempts. The RedHawks have done nothing right this season and it is unlikely the team will be able to shut down Toledo's offense if Opelt is on the field or not. Look for Toledo to walk into Oxford and leave with a relatively easy road win. Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Toledo 39, Miami-Ohio 22Saturday, October 31st, 3:30 p.m. (et)
