Episode 1 – JJ as a Backup QB Episode 2 - Legends in Paradise - 2007 Final Episode - Return of the Legend and His Sidekicks Jones is great story creator and is just as great at getting his stories published. He is a genius scripting out the plays of his own trilogy. He leaves Hawaii with perfect timing to preserve his legendary status. Reports say that SMU will be his last coaching job before retirement. You can almost hear the haunting chants 5-10 years from now welcoming Savior JJ back for His Final Episode.Mahalos & Good Luck to June and the 2007 Legends! We’ll forever remember the ways you captivated the people of Hawaii. Take your time, let it play out and come back for your best and final episode! Aloha for now!"- Warrior Fan ready to move on"Certainly too little much too late. Herman Frazier deserves a lion’s share of the blame for this overall glum situation, but not all. Where was the oversight his superiors in the administration should have been providing? As for the facilities, they didn’t just suddenly fall into disrepair…they have simply become a sad example of the University’s infrastructure as a whole. We need both an administration and public willing to invest in our university…so that books in Hamilton Library aren’t ruined by mildew and floods, classes can be held in rooms that do not leak when it rains, and all UH teams have the necessary equipment and facilities in which to excel. We fail the athletes, the students, ourselves and our future if we do not use this crisis as an opportunity to ensure that positive change happens. Yes, we certainly need a new AD and head coach---but we all need to continue supporting UH teams and to be part of the solution if we want a University to be proud of."-Sue Goodman"June Jones leaving Hawaii is not the end of the world, just the end of a very successful era for UH football. I am sure June Jones will go on to SMU and have a successful career there and Hawaii will rebuild the football program, improve its facilities and learn from their mistakes. June Jones has given Hawaii a great gift during his last season and he will always be loved here. He has brought much needed Pride and unity to our community. He put Hawaii in the national spotlight and it was a great ride! Hopefully, June Jones will go on to SMU and continue recruiting players from the Islands opening new doors and scholarship opportunities to our local boys.Who knows, there may be long flowing hair hanging out from behind SMU helmets in the near future.Aloha June and best of luck!!"- viewer"My wife and I are like many Hawaii fans…fiercely loyal. With that loyalty, comes the right to say our peace. To insult Coach Jone’s intelligence the way the University did, offering him “what the Athletic Department has needed” at the 23rd hour is Arrogant, Disrespectful, and just showed a real lack of Class. How can we have such “Intelligent” people, be so lacking in common sense and decency. Mr. Frazier, unfortunately, was an athlete. An exceptional Athlete at that. What comes with all that God given ability in his case, is exactly that…..the God Complex! He needs to leave….period! Be a man! Humble yourself, state your mistakes, and resign! As for Coach Jones, like Coach Tomey, we will always have the sincerest “Aloha” in our hearts for you. We wish you, not only success, but tremendous success. I can tell you that my wife and I will cheer for you and SMU every game that you play……….”UNLESS IT”S AGAINST THE WARRIORS”. You deserve this opportunity at SMU. I hope they take better care of you than the University of Hawaii Leadership has. Thanks for all of the great moments Coach!! "- With Aloha in our hearts!...............Chuck & Lisa Furtado(Waikoloa, HI)"P.S………….Anyone who thinks it was about the money isn’t much smarter than the idiots that let Coach Jones slip through their fingertips.""Now that June Jones is gone its about time to see who paid half his $800000 a year salary. And wondering if last offer of $1.5M was to be paid by UH alone or with sponsors help. Why a mystery of what private sector has helped out for 9 years. Just wondering."- viewer"June Jones not only did an excellent job of bringing prominence to the University of Hawaii football program, by leaving, he also brought much needed attention to the egregious bureaucracy that ties everyone's hands behind their back, not just one man's, such as Frazier. If, from this lesson, UH only improves their athletics department, then they have learned nothing from Jones. Improvement has to be campus-wide. It is, after all, a school for learning, not a professional football program. For example, look at all the talented high school students who look with awe at mainland university academic programs, facilities, and athletics. It's almost inevitable for them leave. They have great desires and dreams which UH is not capable of assisting to acheive their endeavors. I left and I was glad that I did. It's night and day, and that is what Jones wanted for the school's football program. Bravo for him doing an excellent job of bringing progress to UH. Boo to the system and its people that hinder or defeat great people and their ideas.Jones led Hawaii to the Sugar Bowl, but believe me folks, his leaving is the National Championship for UH's future if the president is a willing leader for change."-R. Onomura"I don't accept President McClain's apology. It does not make it less painful that Coach JJ was forced to leave...sure, HF was the catalyst behind this screw-up but McClain and Hinshaw is just as much to blame. Nine years of begging, pleading, and asking for changes and upgrades in the athletic fields and building were met with blank stares and quizzical looks like "what's he talking about?" The President and Chancellor should also pack their bags and say, we're going to "Hele on." Good luck JJ, thanks for the incredible ride. We know you'll turn around the SMU team like you did the Warriors. Mahalo."-Jerry Nicolas, Oceanside, Ca."Aloha!I wanted to say that I think Herman Frazier did a terrible job in focusing on Hawaii's Athletic program. He didn't see the damage that was being done and when he did, it was too late. He didn't want his program to improve with all the recommendations from Jones and other staff. He should step down! The perfect person to fill Frazier's shoes would be the former UH Media Director Lois Manin. She has the experience and knowledge of the Athletic program and what it needs to succeed. She is currently the Asst. Director of the Aloha Stadium and will be a welcoming addition to save our Athletic program...our Football program."Mahalo! - Ananias Temaeva"Crumbling infrastructure is not limited to UH football, it is rampant in DOE and the State overall. Shifting priorities and finding new ways to raise money for this problem are what's required. Unfortunately, Hawaii is not known for initiative, innovation, or anything but maintaining the status quo. There's no point in trying to pin blame on someone (Hawaii's favorite pasttime); just get going and make some decisions. These problems can be solved, but only if people are focused and comitted to doing something different."- MIKE McCRARY"To wait 10 days before naming a new head coach will severely hurt the Warriors recruiting efforts. They've already been hurt with the departure of June Jones. Can't an interim head coach be appointed so they can get organized and move ahead? This delay will be a huge blow to the football program, just as it was for the basketball program last year, when Herman Frazier took "forever" to name Riley Wallace's replacement! If there's anyone who can create championship teams with "spartan" facilities it's Cal Lee! Have you ever gone up to Saint Louis and looked at their sports facilities? Compared to those at Kamehameha or Punahou, on a scale of 1 to 10, they're a "2"! Yet, what school has won more State football championships than any other? Saint Louis by a landslide! How'd they do it? Their coach, Cal Lee, and his staff!"- viewer"They were undefeated this year without opulent facilities and shower soap. What would UH gain above a perfect record with opulent facilities and free cars for the football players?"- viewer"Instead of staying in Hawaii to work out issues with the UH program, June Jones took theMoney and ran. This shows he does not care about Hawaii contrary to his lip service over the years. He has a long record of jumping from position to position every 2 years or so.Frazier is going to be the scape goat for Jones quitting on the UH football program and disappointing the loyal fans."- viewer"I think Hawaii football will never be the same. How can you replace the best UH Coach there ever was? The only thing left to do now is pick up the pieces. How come were only asking why, now? Everyone new his contract was about to expire. I guess we were all caught up in the unforgetable season and forgot. Maybe after a few losing seasons and a shortfall or recruits it will all sink in. The bottom line is coaching is a business and it should have been handled like one."- viewer"I hope UH consider one of the UH assistance coaches for the head coach position. This way we can continue to operate the "Run & Shoot." Coach Jones demonstrated that this offense is the way to go.I don't think the fans will accept any other offense than the "Run & Shoot." Hopefully, another UH assistance coach can be the offensive coordinator and follow in Coach Jones foot steps and continue to run that offense. All the players knows this offense and can continue next year without missing a beat. Go Warriors!"-Mahalo, Byron (UH fan)"All is not lost when it comes to UH football. Don't forget all that was done this year was done with the weakest schedule in the country. If the team and the new coaching staff just concentrate on winning the WAC and getting back to playing real football, by that I mean, you run to win and you pass to score. Under June Jones no running the football only works in a weak conference. All that passing did not run time off the clock and the UH defense was on the field much to long. So don't get down, lets get back to the time UH was a great defensive team."-Rob Roast Waikiki"Upon learning of June Jones’s departure to SMU this morning. The initial feelings were of shock and disappointment of course!!“I mean we’re coming off this high of the greatest season ever and the best football team in UH History that rallied and re-invigorated the entire states’ Aloha Spirit, and Sense of CommunityBut in taking a step back and looking at the circumstances leading to his decision. I can see why he made the decision to move on. I think it came down to a lack of commitment from Herm Frazier & The Athletic Dept. to June Jones and our Football program as a whole. He was taken for granted, it seems!!It was clear in this morning’s press conference from June Jones that he desired to be part of a program such as SMU that had a 100% commitment to Their football program. Meaning a forward thinking athletic dept., administration, all the best facilities and more than adequate recruiting budgets and resources.I’m sure the contract he was offered between 1.8 mill – 2.0 mill a year was exciting for him, but ultimately I think he may have just felt that with the stateOf our athletic dept. He had simply done everything he could do here, and even if we matched the dollar amount, I believe he would have made the same decision.June Jones has accomplished and brought a tremendous amount of excitement & success to our program in the last 9 years. We need to quickly mourn the Emotion of his loss…, Fire & Appoint a new Athletic Director and continue the legacy of success June Jones has left us with by addressing all of the needOf the football program, and appointing a new head coach. I personally think Cal Lee should get a very serious look. I think he could potentially do more for the program that even an experienced college coach coming from the mainland.June Jones…Thanks for the memories and Good Luck @ SMU…ALOHA-"- James Murphy"It's too bad that the leaving of June Jones finally wakes up the university. The state of Hawaii and the university wants a big time program, but does not want to pay for it. Both of you, deserve what has happened. When June came to Hawaii he started to complain about the facilities and guess what, the State and the university just did not listen. Then you folks hire an Athletic Director who has a attitude, just sit on Junes complaints and it will go away. Well guess what, we lost the best coach in UH history and now we have to start all over again. We will probably lose alot of the players on the football team. If you think you folks are going to fill the stands at Aloha Stadium you got a second thought coming. Its going to take whoever the new coach is, a very hard time to bring the football program to were it is today thanks to June Jones. I really wish him alot of luck. I wish June Jones the best at SMU and apologize for the stupidty of our UH officials and the State Legislature to give more funding to the football program. I as a fan will miss him.."- Lopaka Stevens, Kauai E-mail Thoughts | More Opinions 1 | Part 3 |
