With June Jones deciding to leave for Southern Methodist University, University of Hawaii officials said they have started the search for a new head football coach.

There have been a number of coaches whose names have emerged who could be frontrunners.

Jones himself suggested five coaches he felt would be good choices to lead the team in his absence.

Potential Candidates:
  • Norm Chow (NFL Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator)
  • Duane Akina (Texas University defensive coordinator)
  • Cal Lee (UH linebackers coach)
  • Kevin Gilbride (NFL Giants offensive coordinator)
  • Dick Tomey (former UH head coach/current San Jose St. coach)
  • Sources have confirmed that three Hawaii assistant coaches committed to leave with Jones. The coaches are defensive coordinator Greg McMackin, quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison and runningbacks coach Wes Suan. Brothers Cal and Ron Lee and Rich Miano confirmed that they will remain at UH.

Since the head coaching job is a state position, the state by law must post the job for at least 10 days.
