The final chapter of a dream season was still unfinished late Sunday for the University of Hawaii Warriors football team.

Head coach June Jones was in Dallas on Sunday night, meeting with officials from Southern Methodist University about taking over the school's head coach position that has been vacant since October.

Reports are saying that UH would need to release Jones from his contract in order for him to accept the SMU job.

Hawaii officials refused to comment on the report, but said that Hawaii Athletics Director Herman Frazier is still in communications with Jones' agent, Leigh Steinberg.

Steinerg said the outpouring from Hawaii has been emotional for Jones during this decision-making process. In the past three days Hawaii has offered two contracts to Jones, including a five-year, $7.5 million deal that would make him the highest paid coach in the Western Athletic Conference.

But according to an e-mail Jones sent to close personal friends and supporters, his resignation as head coast would not stem from displeasure with his salary, but the lack of requests accomplished in his tenure at UH in regards to facilities and raises for assistant coaches.

SMU likely can provide a higher salary and a bigger budget and better facilities.

But SMU also carries a culture of losing.

Jones, who turns 55 next month, is 75-41 with the Warriors.
