Warrior Head Coach To Weigh Options At SMUPOSTED: 2:47 pm HST January 4,
2008 HONOLULU -- Hawaii football coach June Jones has a big decision to make. An offer as high as $2 million a year is reportedly on the table for Jones to be head coach at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. The Mustangs have not made an official offer to Jones, but he is scheduled to meet with SMU officials in Dallas on Saturday regarding the vacant head coaching job there. The University of Hawaii did extend a deal to the school's all-time winningest head coach on Thursday, but the details of that contract have not been disclosed. UH currently pays Jones $800,000 a year for the contract that expires in June. However, the entire UH football budget is just slightly higher than the reported SMU offer.Over the last two days, Jones has met with Hawaii President David McClain, Athletics Director Herman Frazier and Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw. The 2007 Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year is expected to return to Hawaii from Dallas sometime next week. The Warrior football team also learned on Friday that All-American Davone Bess will not return to Hawaii for his Senior season. The three-time All Conference slot back applied for the NFL draft after wrapping-up a junior campaign that earned him All-American honors with 108 catches for 1,266 yards and 12 touchdowns.Bess will finish his collegiate career with 293 catches, just 23 shy of the NCAA career record set by Purdue's Taylor Stubblefield.According to his agent, Kenny Zuckerman, the decision to leave Manoa was not easy.Bess has received second-round draft pick projections from three evaluators and is scheduled to begin training in Tempe, Ariz., next week in preparation for the NFL Combine set for late February.
