What Is The Sugar Bowl?

POSTED: 9:36 am HST December 3, 2007

Founded in 1935, the Sugar Bowl is the second-oldest college football bowl game in the country, after the Rose Bowl.

Its official title is the Allstate Sugar Bowl, named after its current sponsor. The game is played at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.

In 2006, the Sugar Bowl game temporarily moved to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia, because of the extensive damage suffered at the Louisiana Superdome when Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005.

The Sugar Bowl is a member of the Bowl Championship Series, known as the BCS. Under current BCS format, the Sugar Bowl hosts the Southeastern Conference champion against a top-tier at-large opponent, unless the SEC champion goes to the BCS National Championship Game.

Lousiana State University won the 2006 Sugar Bowl, beating Notre Dame 41 to 14. Next year's Sugar Bowl game is set for Jan. 1, 2008.
