Warrior fever gripped the Hawaiian Islands Saturday after the University of Hawaii's football team clinched the championship for the Western Athletic Conference.

Diehard fans snatched up history-making memorabilia as soon as it was made available after No. 14 Hawaii beat No. 17 Boise State Saturday 39-27.

KITV's Catherine Cruz reported that fans mobbed the Rainboutique store at Ward Center, and to accommodate, shop keepers opened a half hour early.

Among those savoring Saturday night's win and sporting the WAC championship hats was UH Athletic Director Herman Frazier.

"The conference gives these out as soon as the games over -- hats and shirts," Frazier said.

The shirts were a hot item at Saturday night's game, but there weren't enough for everyone.

"Right before we go up, they sold out, and they told us to come down here this morning," said Kona resident Bob Herter.

This family, some who traveled from Hilo for the game, were covered with all kinds of UH equipment.

"I'm going to save my ticket. I'm going to frame my ticket. That's one that's history -- right there," said Hilo resident Harley Smith.

Fans anxious to be among the first to sport the championship T-shirts and hats can count on them being around town sooner than later. There seems to be no stopping the Warrior mania now, Cruz said.
