UH makes name change for some sports teams
'Warriors' for the men; 'Rainbow Wahine' for the women
The University of Hawaii Athletics Department announced Wednesday that the new nickname for all men's sports will be "Warriors" and the nickname for all women's sports will be "Rainbow Wahine."
This comes after UH Athletics Director Ben Jay told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that he was leaning toward that decision.
Before Wednesday's announcement, the men's sports teams were divided between three nicknames -- "Warriors" for the football, volleyball and golf teams; "Rainbow Warriors" for the basketball, swimming, diving and tennis teams; and the baseball team has always been known as the "Rainbows."
UH women's sports teams were already known as the "Rainbow Wahine."
The change is scheduled to take effect publicly on July 1. Internally, the change is effective immediately.
