TIPS FOR SEASONAL ALLERGY SUFFERERS TO FIND RELIEF
For many of the state's seasonal allergy sufferers, the end of summer signals the start of itchy eyes, a runny nose, and constant sneezing and coughing.
"The fall can be an uncomfortable time for allergy sufferers, regardless of whether they're outdoors or indoors," said Dr. Jeffrey C. Kam, an allergist and immunologist at Hawaii Pacific Health. "Fortunately, people can take a few simple steps to prevent and reduce their reactions."
Dr. Kam and other allergists at Hawaii Pacific Health offer these tips for easier breathing:
Keep windows closed – Keep windows and doors closed to prevent pollen and molds from entering into your home or car.
Vacuum and dust – Vacuum and dust at least twice a week to reduce dust and dust mites. Wear a mask when doing housework or even leave the house for a couple of hours afterwards to avoid breathing in allergens temporarily released into the air.
Limit moisture in your home – Reduce moisture in kitchens and bathrooms, and be careful to not over water plants. Moisture spawns mold growth.
Reduce pet dander – Wash your pets regularly and keep them out of bedrooms. Pet dander, or pet saliva and dead skin, cause allergies.
Protect your mattress and pillows – Use a mattress protector and pillow cases to keep out dust mites and other allergens from collecting where you sleep. While sheets and other bedding can be washed, mattresses and pillows are not as easily cleaned.
Take prescribed allergy medications - Take prescription and over-the-counter allergy medications as directed for the best results.
Stay indoors when pollen count or humidity is high – Spend more time inside during pollen season, particularly good advice for hard-core allergy sufferers. Also, avoid being outside on humid days, as the moisture suspends air-born particles that cause allergies.
