HONOLULU -- The Hawaii Republican Party's bid to win the state House and even the balance of power in the Legislature did not materialize.
With Democrats holding a 36-15 majority in the House, Republicans needed at least three new seats to give them enough votes to sustain vetoes by Gov. Linda Lingle. Instead, it appears they will only hold 10.
Republican Incumbents Losses: Mark Jernigan, District 6 Brian Blundell, District 10 Kika Bukoski, District 12 Bertha Leong, District 18 Guy Ontai, District 37 David Pendleton, District 49Kymberly Pine was the lone bright spot in the state House races for Republicans. Pine defeated Democratic incumbent Romeo Mindo for the District 43 seat.
In the Senate, 12 of the 25 seats were up for re-election, with four of those belonging to uncontested Democrats.
In the only contested Senate race without an incumbent, Democrat Clayton Hee defeated Republican Jim Henshaw for the Kahuku-Kaneohe seat.
