A Hawaii Pacific University basketball player died Monday night after a skateboarding accident, HPU's head basketball coach said.

Kameron Steinhoff, 21, was skateboarding with his high school buddies in a residential area of Temple Valley in Kaneohe early Tuesday morning when he fell, according to Steinhoff's brother, Keoni Steinhoff.

"I guess he was going downhill and he lost control He tried to stop. He slipped, fell, whacked the back of his head. His friends found him pinned under a parked car," Keoni Steinhoff said.

Kameron Steihoff was a star basketball player for Punahou School. He was named the tournament's outstanding player when he led Punahou to the state championship in 2008.

He was also an up and coming player for HPU.

"This is obviously very tragic, he was an outstanding young man, outstanding basketball player and an outstanding student. A lot of people don't know that about him because they knew him as a basketball player, but he was an outstanding student as well," HPU Athletic Director and men's basketball head coach Darren L. Vorderbruegge said in a statement.

"What stood out to me over the last few days is the fact that he was loved by so many people. So many people came out (to the hospital). The HPU community, the athletic community and the state of Hawaii," Vorderbruegge said.

His brother said he last saw Kameron Sunday night at a family dinner.

"We hung out in the yard, he played with his nephew. We just hung out as a family and it was real great," Keoni Steinhoff said.

Kameron got a second chance three years ago, after he ruptured his spleen playing high school football, according to his brother.

"That was a big step in his life because you know, he had a new life."

This time, hundreds of family members, friends and teammates surrounded the Steinhoffs as they said goodbye to Kameron.

"The thing about him is he kind of brought people together. He was strong, all the girls thought he was handsome, he had this killer smile," Vorderbruegge said.

"He's a great friend. He's always going to be there for you. He was a great person. It's just hard to see him go out like this." said close friend Kawika Lyons.

"We're really going to dedicate next year to him. And we all want to do something special for him next year," Lyons said.

"He was just a competitor in sports. He loved basketball. He loved challenges. He was a hardworker. I'm so proud of him. My family's so proud of him. It's just tragic. I'm going to miss him. A lot," said Keoni Steinhoff.

Memorial services have not been set.
