A whale that crews rescued and took to a specialized facility on the Big Island died on Sunday, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials said.

The Blainesville beaked whale was found off Maui on Aug. 16. The U.S. Coast Guard helped fly the creature to the University of Hawaii Hilo Hawaii Cetacean Rehabilitation Facility.

The marine mammal died at 1:50 p.m.

A necropsy of the whale found it suffered from moderate pneumonia, severe gastrointestinal disease, kidney disease and deteriorating body condition, NOAA Fisheries Services officials said.

The new facility opened in December.
