A Board of Education candidate said that information mailed to Honolulu newsrooms is part of a false "smear campaign."

Kris DeRego, 24, is a University of Hawaii student. He is one of three candidates running to represent Windward Oahu on the Board of Education.

Portions of his Xanga and MySpace Web pages were e-mailed to KITV and other news organizations, containing semi-nude photos of DeRego and allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman and admitted to it, blaming a "split personality."

"None of this is true. This is a blatant attack on my character," DeRego said.

A woman who was his former best friend, who later filed for a temporary restraining order against him, made up the information and put it in his personal sites, DeRego said.

"I had made the mistake of providing her with the passwords to a number of my Internet accounts, all of them, nearly all of them were used to run a smear campaign against me," DeRego said. "None of it is true. I do not have a split personality, to the best of my knowledge."

The woman, who KITV did not identify because she claims to be a sexual assault victim, told a reporter that she did not post the information online.

She won a three-year restraining order from a judge this June against DeRego, claiming he continuously stalked her in person, by phone and e-mail.

DeRego denied the accusations, but didn't fight the order.

"I just wanted the situation to go away as quickly and as expediently as possible, with as little damage to my finances as possible. I was advised that the best way to do that, since I wanted nothing to do with someone who was smearing my name, was to just agree to the temporary restraining order," he said.

The Honolulu Advertiser endorsed DeRego saying his "youthful voice could add some balance and fresh ideas to the Board" of Education.

"I'm concerned not just for how this will affect the election, but how this will affect my life after that," DeRego said.

DeRego's former friend, who filed the restraining order against him, said he is a chronic liar and told KITV, "I think it's a mistake that he's running for office. He has too many skeletons in his closet."
