Sen. Gary Hooser on Tuesday said he will make a motion Wednesday to pull the controversial civil union bill out of committee for a vote by the full Senate.

After an hour-long meeting behind closed doors with Senate Democrats, Hooser emerged saying he will make a motion to pull the civil unions bill out of committee for vote on the Senate floor.

"I have said from the beginning I am committed to having a vote on this bill and I am personally compelled to take that issue forward," Hooser said.

The Senate Majority leader said he is unsure if he has the necessary nine votes to yank the stalled civil unions measure out for a vote.

Pulling a bill from committee is a rare move. The last time it happened was about 10 years ago.

Groups for and against the civil unions have voiced their positions at the Capitol throughout the legislative session this year.

The Senate Majority Leader Hooser earlier said he would try to force a vote on same-sex civil unions if no other senators did so by the end of the legislative session in May.

The legislation has stalled since a tie vote in its Senate committee was not enough to keep it advancing. The vote split by the senators with Chairman Sens. Brian Taniguchi, Dwight Takamine and Clarence Nishihara for the bill and Sens. Sam Slom, Mike Gabbard and Robert Bunda against the measure.

Senators KITV has talked to off the record said they do not think Hooser has the necessary nine votes to revive the civil unions bill. If he is successful at forcing it out of committee, the full Senate vote on the measure could be as early as Friday.
