HONOLULU -- Hawaii elections officials on Tuesday said they are prepared for a high turnout at the polls.September's primary election saw dismally low turnout, but excitement over the races for president and mayor and the rail transit issue could break records on Tuesday.Officials said they have enough workers to handle it.
"Hopefully with adjustment by voters in the time they choose to vote and officials on hand, things can move along smoothly," state Elections Director Kevin Cronin said.During the primary, some voters were inconvenienced when polls workers failed to show up at several precincts. The elections division has hired 3,600 temporary elections workers to staff more than 300 precincts statewide. So, they know there will be no-shows. They just do not know where."Things totally unexpected, things you can't control for, they happen and it's not unreasonable to think similar things will happen tomorrow," Cronin said. The polls officially are open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. However, people in line at 6 p.m. will be allowed to vote. The best times to avoid lines are midmorning -- from about 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and mid-afternoon -- from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.Voters need to bring photo identification and go to the same place they voted in the primary. If you are in doubt, check the yellow card mailed from the elections division or check the precinct finder on the office of elections Web site.Political party leaders said they will be watching the check-in process, but unlike some places on the mainland they said they will not challenge voters with proper identification.
