Hawaii Delegation Grateful For Party's Decision

Hawaii's delegates at the Democratic National Convention said they are grateful for the Democratic Party and Sen. Barack Obama's support of the Native Hawaiian Recognition Bill.

The Democratic Party votes on a national platform every four years. Delegates this year included Native Hawaiians in the so-called Akaka Bill after Sen. Daniel Akaka, who is the architect of the measure.

"Not only Native Hawaiians, but specifically the Akaka Bill and the apology resolution," Hawaii Democratic Party Chairman Brian Schatz said.

The embattled Akaka Bill has struggled to make it through Congress. It is not supported by President George W. Bush's administration. That could change with a new administration in November.

"Well, it's one more small step in the direction of protecting Native Hawaiian rights," Schatz said.

That step would only be effective if Obama is elected president. Schatz said, "President Obama" would sign the bill if it makes through Congress.

"We're very proud to stand with Sen. Obama and Sen. Akaka and Sen. (Daniel) Inouye and stand with Native Hawaiians in federal recognition. It’s in direct contrast to the other party," Schatz said.
