Sen. Barack Obama tried to pack in a busy day for his last full day of his vacation in Hawaii on Thursday.

The Obama family and friends first went to Hanauma Bay first thing in the morning to spend time at the beach.

Dressed in a T-shirt, shorts, a Chicago White Sox baseball cap and rubber slippers, Obama and his party arrived at a largely empty beach under cloudy skies and drizzling rain.

Lines of beachgoers to enter the nature preserve south of Waikiki grew as the sun came out.

Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann greeted Obama when his motorcade pulled into the beach parking lot.

Hannemann spoke to the children in Obama's group before they walked down a steep incline to the popular bay.

The family stayed at Hanauma Bay while he headed over to Sandy Beach for some bodysurfing.

After he left, his group stopped along the way to Sandy Beach. He went down a cliff to the reef area. There he tossed a lei into the ocean. It is the same place where he scattered the ashes of his mother.

He then went bodysurfing, catching a number of waves. People waved to him and Obama shook hands with a bodyboarder in the water.

The family eventually made their way to Pearl Harbor where they went to the Arizona Memorial.
