  • Obama Yearns For Hawaii Return

    Senator Seeking Democratic Presidential Nomination

With only two days left until the Hawaii Democratic Party holds its caucus, presidential candidates are making a huge and unprecedented push for support in Hawaii.

Chelsea Clinton campaigned for her mom, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, on a three-day visit to the islands, and Sen. Barack Obama's local supporters said they have been "phone banking" across the islands all day.

KITV's Denby Fawcett spoke to Obama on a "one-on-one" satellite interview Saturday afternoon.

She reported that in the past, Hawaii's Democratic caucus was usually ignored. But in this tight race, every delegate vote, even Hawaii's 29 delegates, will matter.

Obama discussed the importance of the Hawaii caucus and his hopes to return to the islands soon.

Obama was campaigning in Milwaukee Saturday, and he told Fawcett even though he can't be in Hawaii, he's very hopeful that he will win the state.

"I have got a terrific surrogate in my sister who has been working actively there along with so many of my friends, so hopefully we will be able to succeed, but I want to make sure everyone turns out for this caucus," Obama said.

"Sen. Dan Inouye is going around today saying you went to Punahou, and maybe Hillary Clinton can relate better to the regular people of Hawaii," Fawcett told Obama.

Obama laughed and said, "Shame on Danny for trying to pull that stunt. I went to Punahou on a scholarship. I was raised by a single mom and my grandmother," Obama answered back.

Obama said he was raised by his grandparents, Stanley and Madelyn, in an apartment on Beretania Street.

"Tutu is doing fine, and she is following the election. She is following closely the election -- can't travel because she has a bad back. She follows it on CNN. She calls me once in a while to give me some advice. Mostly she's just proud of us and wants me to bring her great-grandchildren back to Hawaii," said Obama.

He said if elected, he might have a so-called Hawaii White House here for vacations.

"It is the place where I feel if things get too hectic, I can come back and get centered, and it will always be in my heart, and I hope if we are successful, I would come to Hawaii. Certainly it would be my preference over Crawford, Texas," Obama joked.

He said his healthcare plan would reduce the ever-rising health insurance co-payments and make insurance cheaper.

"For people who have health insurance, what we want to do is work with your employer to put in place a catastrophic reinsurance that would reduce your costs by up to $2,500 per year per family," he explained.

He said he yearns to return to Hawaii and added that his golf game hasn't gotten any better.

"Not playing once a year. The last time I played golf was in April," Obama quipped. "I am assuming the next time if I tee off if it is in Hawaii, someone is going to have to give me a lot of strokes."

His golf game aside, Obama said if he could get the nomination sewed up, he would love to come back to Hawaii for his daughters' spring vacation.

In the past, he has come home to Hawaii every Christmas vacation. This was the first year he missed in a long time, he said.
