Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona on Tuesday called for a vote on whether to hold a constitutional convention as he is allowed to do if there has not been a "con con" in nine years.

The last time voters approved a constitutional convention was almost 30 years ago.

Aiona said a constitutional convention is a tremendous opportunity although not everyone will agree.

"I believe there will be some opposition to this constitutional convention and that will be from the people who oppose, or i should say favor the status quo. They oppose change, but the world as we know it is changing rapidly, and we need to take a fresh look at how we operate our government," Aiona said.

If voters approve a con con, the Legislature will decide the form of the session.

Hawaii's last constitutional convention in 1978 established term limits for the governor and lieutenant governor, created the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and adopted the Hawaiian language at the official state language.
