The men’s 4x100m freestyle relay was expected to be a battle between the United States and Australia, but it ended up being a rematch between the U.S. and France from 2008 when the Americans came back in heroic form to take gold.
However, this time the ending was reversed as France came back in the final leg to catch the United States to take gold. The U.S. finished second.
Nathan Adrian swam the first leg for the U.S., followed by Michael Phelps, Cullen Jones and Ryan Lochte as the anchor.
With the silver, Michael Phelps earns his 17 career medal, and his first medal of the 2012 London Games. Saturday, Phelps finished fourth in the 400-meter individual medley.
Phelps needs just two more medals of any color to become the most decorated Olympian of all time.
