2005 HONOLULU -- The city's medical examiner is the target of a sex and age discrimination complaint filed by the chief investigator in the office. The complaint pits two respected, veteran crime experts against each other.Susan Siu has been an investigator with the Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office for 21 years; the last four as chief investigator. She has filed a personnel complaint against her boss, Medical Examiner Dr. Kanthi De Alwis, who's been a doctor in the department for 20 years and has headed the department for the last five years.Siu's claims?"Unfair treatment to myself, sexual harassment and also age discrimination," Siu said."Dr. De Alwis denies these allegations, and looks forward to complete vindication when the city completes its personnel office investigation that's currently ongoing," said Jim Bickerton, attorney for Honolulu's chief medical examiner Dr. Kanthi De Alwis.Siu said De Alwis has been taking away her responsibilities, including scheduling and training."She has asked me to retire. She says that I'm going to retire. She's also asked me to step down from my position, and she waited to put a young, inexperienced person in my place," Siu said.De Alwis told KITV she re-assigned some of Siu's duties to other staffers because Siu was complaining about being overworked."Dr. De Alwis is an extremely fair person. She's not engaged in any wrongful conduct and certainly not in the conduct that's alleged here," Bickerton said.De Alwis' lawyer said Siu may be "disgruntled" or just looking for a way to make money by going public with her case as an internal investigation is just getting underway.
