Closing arguments wrapped up on Thursday in the Matthew Higa murder trial with his attorney accusing another man of lying about the morning Cyrus Belt died. The morning the toddler died, his mothers' boyfriend, Shane Mizusawa, was watching Belt. Higa's defense attorney Randy Oyama said someone killed Belt before Higa threw him off the bridge and onto the H-1 Freeway. Oyama said Mizusawa is lying about some details of the morning. "He wants to assist the prosecutors in convicting my client," Oyama said. "What it shows judge is that he is not a very credible witness, and we submit to this court he has a consciousness of guilt." The prosecutor said Mizusawa was like a father to Belt and that drugs made Higa homicidal. "He killed that small child as a result of volunteer crystal methamphetamine intoxication," Honolulu Prosecutor Peter Carlisle said. Judge Dexter Del Rosario said he will announce his verdict next week. If convicted, Higa could be sentenced to life in prison without parole.
