Rains Soak Oahu, Maui CountyForecasters Issue High-Surf Advisory Through FridayPOSTED: 11:33 am HST February 2, 2010 HONOLULU -- Heavy rains could fall over parts of Oahu and Maui County on Tuesday, prompting a flood advisory, the National Weather Service said.Forecasters tracked heavy rains falling on Molokai in the early afternoon. The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for Maui County.Doppler radar showed heavy rains fell on parts of Oahu throughout the morning. As the cold front moves through the islands, winds with gusts of 15 mph to 20 mph will follow, officials said. Forecasters warned residents to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and areas prone to flooding. There was a flood advisory for Oahu earlier in the day.The heavy downpours caused flooding around the Ala Moana area.Pools of water collected on Kona Street creating an obstacle course for drivers.On Beretania Street umbrellas were a popular accessory as well as a necessity."It floods like this every time it has a heavy pour," Bernard Spaulding said. "It gets up to a foot deep sometimes.""Seattle is gray at this time of the year so I rather if I'm going to be in the rain I rather be here than in Seattle," Seattle resident Arlene Nornes said.Motorists slowly made their way down Kalia Road after heavy rains poured down on Waikiki.Officials directed traffic through most of Tuesday afternoon.The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory for the north- and west-facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Maui County that will begin at 4 p.m. and last until Friday at 6 a.m. The waves will hit 15- to 18-feet high by Tuesday night, forecasters said.Big Island's summits are under a high-wind advisory.
