Police said alcohol and speed may have played a role in a crash Saturday night that killed a former Kahuku High School football star and left several people injured.

Waika Carvalho, 23, of Hauula, was killed when the pickup truck he was riding in went out of control and hit a guard rail on Kamehameha Highway in Laie around 10:48 p.m. Saturday.

Police said three other people in the truck were hurt, including the 19-year-old driver, who was listed in serious condition.

Carvalho led Kahuku High's Red Raiders to the state football championship in 2003. He was set to start a new construction job on Monday.

The crash forced the closure of the highway for four hours Saturday night while police investigated.

Police have opened a negligent homicide investigation into the crash.
