A selection committee has chosen six finalists in the search for the next Honolulu Police Chief, including two applicants from the mainland, according to Honolulu Police Commission Chairwoman Christine Camp.

Four of the finalists come from within the Honolulu Police Department including: Capt. Louis Kealoha, of the juvenile services division; Assistant Chief Delbert Tatsuyama, who oversees the department's administrative bureau; acting Honolulu Police Chief Paul Putzulu; and Assistant Chief Debora Tandal, who heads HPD's support services bureau.

The two finalists from outside of Hawaii are Cmdr. Harry Markely from the city of Phoenix Police Department and Cmdr. Gary Yamashiroya of the Chicago Police Department.

Putzulu has been the acting chief since Boisse Correa retired in August after 40 years with the department. The police commission had decided not to renew Correa's five-year contract.

The selection committee originally forwarded just four names, but the police commission wanted more choices so she asked for two of the other top-ranked candidates, Camp said. They had already gone through an assessment that included simulations of real-life police situations.

In the next step, the police commission will interview all six candidates, take testimony from the public and then select someone for the $136,000-a-year chief's job.
