Maui Officials Say Dogs Attacked Animals In Refuge

Officials Say Sheep, 280-Pound Goat Killed

POSTED: 4:58 pm HST November 5, 2009

Maui officials said dogs killed four sheep and a 280-pound goat on the Maui Coastal Land Trust's Waihee refuge.

The animals were killed earlier this week in a fenced area on the refuge.

The sheep owner said 26 others were injured in Monday's attack. Three of the animals had to be euthanized because they were badly injured, he said.

He said he is concerned about nearby residents, saying that if the dogs could kill a 280-pound goat, they can easily harm a child.

The attack and the deaths of five to seven uau kani birds at the refuge around two weeks ago could be related, officials at the Maui Coastal Land Trust project said.
