Family Of Man Shot By Police WorrySiblings Say Suspect Got Into Trouble Despite WarningsPOSTED: 5:01 pm HST November 4,
2009 NANAKULI, Hawaii -- The family of a man shot by police in a stolen car in Waikele said he recently left home despite their efforts to keep him out of trouble. The two plain-clothes officers who were injured before the shooting have both been released from the hospital, the Honolulu Police Department said. They will be placed on leave while the department and the prosecutor office investigate the shooting. That is standard operating procedure when an officer fires a gun.The driver, Jeremiah Lopez III, 23, was shot three times trying to escape police."I just pray and I just hope that everybody does the same, that he gets better, and I am sorry for everybody that he did hurt. I just don't want to lose my brother. That's about it," Lopez's sister, Gabrielle, said.Police surrounded Jeremiah Lopez III in a stolen Dodge Durango in a KFC drive-through at Waikele Center. Two others in the car, Cherish C.K. Craig, 25, and Ronald Kalani-Pawai, 24, were arrested at the scene.Jeremiah Lopez III is now in guarded condition. Police were not letting the Lopez family visit the hospital."It's really affecting our family, causing a lot of pain," Gabrielle Lopez said. The Lopez family now shares a large house in Nanakuli after working themselves out of homelessness. Jeremiah Lopez III left the house a few weeks ago and was getting into "bad stuff" despite their warnings."I really hope this would change him to where he doesn't want to do it again," Lopez's brother, Jamal, said. "It shows me that's the kind of stuff I no like get into."Meanwhile, police investigated other thefts and break-ins on the street where Tuesday's drama began. What amazed the neighborhood is that the truck was stolen elsewhere in Pearl City and ended up right back in front of owner's house where everyone in the neighborhood recognized it and tracked it when it was stolen again.
