Woman Sentenced For 1978 Slaying

Defendant Still Blames Husband For Murder

POSTED: 12:44 pm HST November 2, 2009

A Hawaii family that has waited 30 years for justice was in court on Monday, hoping a woman convicted of killing two men would finally accept responsibility.

Back in the disco era, 1978, 18-year-old newlywed Maryann Acker lured Larry Hasker out of a bar so her husband, William Acker, could rob him. Hasker ended up shot at Hanauma Bay.

In two trials, the second this year, she claimed she did not know her husband was planning to kill. The juries convicted her of murder anyway.

"We have now two juries, 24 people, who have decided she was responsible for Larry Hasker's death and she continues to, in the face of all that, deny it," Deputy Prosecutor Landon Murata said.

Hasker's siblings were in court on Monday, where, now Maryann Bray, received the automatic sentence, life in prison.

"We're just very happy with the outcome and the judges decision, that he took all our feelings into consideration," Hasker's brother, Joe, said.

Bray apologized for Hasker's death, but still blames her husband for his murder and a similar killing in California, continuing the Hasker family's frustration.

"She lied before and she was still lying ," Murata said.

Bray told the judge she has become a new woman in prison and is ready to return to society. Even though she will soon be eligible for parole, prosecutors said she and her husband should stay incarcerated.

"These people should never be let out to be honest they should be held accountable for what they did, the ending of two young lives for no reason. It was a thrill ride for them," Murata said.

Bray plans another appeal.
