HONOLULU -- Federal stimulus money is helping Hawaii become more green.

A federal stimulus grant will outfit 400 Hawaiian homesteaders' homes with solar water heaters and compact florescent lamps.

About $3 million in stimulus funds is being spent on the project.

Department of Hawaiian Homelands Chairman Kaulana Park said the energy-efficiency upgrade will reduce homesteaders' electricity bills by about 30 percent each year.

Park said he is working with Hawaiian homestead leadership to find out which of the 7,000 homestead residences are best suited for solar.

The state will use an additional $3 million in the stimulus grant to install photovoltaic solar panels on state buildings.

All of this is part of the state's plan to reduce Hawaii's use of fossil fuel 70 percent by the year 2030.
