POSTED: 6:08 am HST October 30, 2009

A 17-year-old boy died and another teen was injured Thursday after falling 80 to 90 feet down Mamaewa Gulch, Big Island police said.

Police identified the victim who died as Shea Walling, of a Honokaa.

The gulch is off Kohala Mountain Road in South Kohala.

Walling slipped while trying to climb out of the gulch, police said. A 16-year-old boy hiking with Walling also fell. He suffered cracked ribs and lacerations.

Firefighters pulled Walling and two others from the gulch. Paramedics treated Walling and took him to Kona Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:38 p.m.

Police ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
