Manoa School Copes With H1N1 VirusOfficials Concerned With IllnessPOSTED: 8:33 pm HST October 28, 2009 MANOA, Hawaii -- Local schools are doing the best they can to cope with the swine flu, while they wait for the vaccine to arrive.St. Francis School officials in Manoa reported one confirmed case of swine flu -- a student who has recovered and is back in class. Two maintenance workers were out sick, one with a bad cold, another being tested for swine flu."Obviously we're concerned so we're taking as many precautions as we can and reminding people if sick stay home if diagnosed you're out for seven days," said Sister Joan of Arc Souza. The school has purchased plenty of germ-killing spray and teachers are urged to wipe down desks and doorknobs in their classrooms at least twice a day. Students are thinking about how the virus might be passed."We're a little bit nervous because the dorms had swine flu," said student Ashley Kapau. "(Our) precaution is going to bathroom washing hands before and after we eat (we're) more conscious about what we touch like what's on that item."St. Francis is scheduled to have a swine flu vaccine clinic on Dec. 9. The health department said they'll get it out as soon as they can."We're banking vaccines available school mid to end of November. We're hoping to start clinics mid November, depends on the vaccine that we receive from federal government," said Janice Okubo, with the state health department." We'd like it sooner but that's the way it is.School and health officials want parents to fill out and return the form letting them know if the student wants the vaccine that way they can allocate the limited supplies.
