Police said a crash near the Harano Tunnel on Thursday afternoon shut down the eastbound lanes of the H-3 Freeway for several hours.

Investigators said both lanes were closed after the crash, which happened just after 4:45 p.m. The lanes were reopened at about 8:30 p.m.

A tow truck carried away the smashed Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle just after 7 p.m. after the vehicle crashed and landed on its side, police said.

"She veered off the roadway, struck the wall, flipped over and ended up on the driver's side of the vehicle," said Maj. Clayton Kau, with the Honolulu Police Department. "The vehicle traveled for another 326 feet before it came to a stop."

Police said the driver of the SUV was a 28-year-old woman and was the vehicle's only occupant. Her identity has not been released.

Emergency crews treated and stabilized the victim and transported her to a hospital in critical condition.

Police said they do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the single-car crash, but said they are investigating whether or not the driver was speeding.

After the closure, Honolulu police rerouted traffic near the Moanalua Freeway while investigating the crash, resulting in a major traffic gridlock that also lasted for hours.
