They were loud, they were angry and they told churchgoers that God hates them. The Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church held demonstrations on O'ahu on Sunday.

At the New Hope Christian Fellowship at Farrington High School, the Westboro Baptists denounced what they call Hawaii's sinful decadence. They said God hates the state and the people because of an allowance of adultery and an acceptance of gays.

"You see, God says homosexuality is an abomination," said Westboro member Shirley Phelps-Roper. "This generation has been taught that's a lie, that it's OK to be gay."

The group's words were not met with enthusiasm by many residents.

"These people come from the Mainland and say things like that? It's terrible," said neighbor Solomon Fuller.

The Westboro group said America is doomed and that God hates Hawaii.

"In Hawaii, a lot of different people get along really well because Hawaiians taught them 'aloha,' which means love and acceptance," said KITV reporter Dick Allgire. "What's wrong with that?"

"Well, why aren't you accepting us then? Why aren't you accepting our diversity? I'm not feeling the 'aloha'" Phelps-Roper replied. "The reason you all get along wonderfully is because at the heart of it all, you've all agreed that you will kick the standards of God to the curb, and you will each create your own form of righteousness, because you will not have the righteousness of God."

Another different fundamentalist Christian group showed up with their signs, and another group of counter-demonstrators brought their message. Soon, the gathering became a shouting match.

The members of the New Hope Christian Fellowship stayed out of the fray.

"We all know that people can say what they want to, whether it's true or not," said Dr. Wayne Cordeiro of the New Hope Christian Fellowship. "One of the things about our country is it gives people the right to be deceived, if they want to. But we all know in the Bible, first John, it says 'God is love' and, in him, there is no hate."
