HONOLULU -- At a spiritual gathering on Sunday, the Miles family gathered around a sandbox filled with toys where 3-year-old Koapaka Miles would play every morning. His father, Kamuela, comforted his wife, Erica, who just returned home from the hospital earlier in the day, her injuries still fresh. On Thursday a driver, who police said was intoxicated and speeding slammed into the Miles' car, killing Koapaka and inuring several other family members. The driver of the other vehicle was killed as well.
On Sunday, Kamuela Miles described finding his son after the crash."I remember taking my son out of his car seat, and he was still breathing, and I held him in my arms, and I was just telling him to come back to Daddy, that everything was going to be OK," he said. "And right before he took what seemed to be his last breath, I just looked at him and told him that Daddy loves him. That's when I feel like he, he went."Through the family's sadness, there were smiles as they remembered the young boy."He was like (a) sunflower, because he was so bright -- and even though he would be naughty, he would always put a smile on somebody's face," his father said. The grief of the boy's grandmother, Mary, was overwhelming. She lost her husband, Austin, three days before the crash. Grandpa and grandson were inseparable."I just miss him so much. I miss my little sunshine. And I know that we will get over this, but right now, it's so fresh, and it hurts so bad," she said.Memorial services for Koapaka and his grandfather will be held Friday, May 23 at 6 p.m. at the Waianae Baptist ChurchDonations in memory of the toddler can be dropped off at any West Oahu Community Federal Credit Union Branch.
