Many families in Hawaii ring in the New Year by popping firecrackers.

But the smoke-filled air can be a real health hazard for those with asthma or respiratory problems.

At Ala Moana Thursday afternoon, a team of health professionals was on hand providing tips on how to breathe with ease into the New Year.

Doctors said even short-term exposure to fireworks smoke can trigger respiratory problems.

Doctors recommend wearing a filter mask, drinking plenty of fluids, and also making sure your medications are available and not expired.
