Aftershocks Cause More Damage To Kawaihae PierPOSTED: 2:06 pm HST October 17, 2006 HONOLULU -- The 3.9 aftershock that struck before 6 a.m. on Tuesday did more damage to the pier at Kawaihae Harbor, according to state transportation officials. The damage prompted officials to divert at least one barge carrying much needed provisions to Hilo."The crack on the deck itself has widened to 14 inches, we don't know how deep," Department of Transportation director Rod Haraga said. "If we were to put any of our containers we want to make sure the deck will survive the weight of any of the things we put on there. If we need a crane to offload some of the containers, we need to be sure the deck can withstand that type of loads."Haraga said he does not know yet when the harbor may be deemed safe enough to resume normal operations.
