HONOLULU -- The White House announced on Tuesday that President George W. Bush declared Hawaii a major disaster exists in the State of Hawaii.
Bush ordered federal aid to help local recovery efforts. This makes more money available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Big Island officials are conducting damage assessments. Federal emergency officials have flown in from California to survey the damage that an island government spokeswoman said will "change radically" as reports "stream in."
Also on Tuesday, two earthquakes shook the islands, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
At 5:26 a.m., a 3.9 magnitude quake struck about 8 miles west of Kawaihae and about 8 miles deep.
About 90 minutes later, a 3.6 magnitude quake rocked the state about 8 miles south-southwest from Waikoloa Village and nearly 10 miles deep, according to USGS.
Many people on the Big Island reported feeling the quakes, which could be aftershocks of Sunday's 6.7 earthquake. People on Molokai, Maui and a few on Oahu reported feeling the shaking.
There have been no reports of damage or power loss.
