Whale watching from your screen!UPDATED 10:47 PM HST May 05, 2014Video Transcript
A new website is taking whale- watching to a whole-nother level... KITV4's Brenton Awa is standing by to tell us how. Brenton? Yunji -- the websites called Smart-mine and on it is a map that tracks whales moving around the islands... The maps only been up online for a few days now and it's creator says it's still a work in progress... But if you log on -- you'll see those blue balloons moving around -- those are the whales. 10 They're mainly killer whales or beaked whales... The researchers have focused on them because for one -- those types live and breed in Hawaii -- and two -- we're told there's not a lot of studies on those whales. :22 PHONER - 1231 - 1245 "SINCE THE POPULATION IS LISTED AS ENDANGERED ONE OF THE THINGS THEY MAY DO IS DESIGNATE CRITICAL HABITAT FOR THEM. THEY BASICALLY ANALYZE THE TAG DATA TO TRY TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HABITATS ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO THE WHALES." Researches hope this data will help the species... They also the map will help get the public more interested in whales. :06 Again -- researchers say this isn't the final version of the site... The actual movement of those balloons or whales on the map you just saw is not in real-time just yet.
