A two-car crash that occurred on Kuhio Highway in Kilauea Thursday afternoon resulted in one fatality and several injuries, according to police.
The crash happened shortly after 4 p.m. on Kuhio Highway, near the Pili Road junction, when a Chevrolet SUV attempted to make a turn from the southbound lane and was struck by an oncoming Ford truck.
One of the Chevy's four occupants, a 58-year-old man, died as a result of his injuries. He has been identified as George Nielson.
A 62-year-old female passenger remains in critical condition at the Queen’s Medical Center. The driver of the SUV, 61, and another female passenger, 56, both suffered non-life threatening injuries. Medics transported them to Wilcox Hospital where they remain in stable condition.
All of the occupants in the Chevy were visitors from Washington state.
The driver of the Ford truck, a 55-year-old K?lauea man, did not sustain injuries. Officers directed traffic onto Kolo Road for roughly five hours following the crash to allow KPD's Traffic Safety Section to conduct an on-scene investigation and clear the scene.
The incident remains under police investigation, but speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the cause of the crash.
This is Kauai's third traffic-related fatality of 2014.
Representatives from Life's Bridges, a volunteer-based grief counseling service, and the Kaua'i Visitors Bureau are assisting the victims and their families.
