A 62-year-old bicyclist is fighting for his life after a car slammed into him just before 3 a.m. Thursday morning on Ward Avenue.
Honolulu police say both the car and the bicyclist were going against their lights.
Witnesses say the driver slowed down, but did not stop. The driver was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.
"It did not appear that he came to a complete stop. The driver was arrested for OVUII and taken to the main station," said Lt. Carlene Lau of the Honolulu Police Department.
Police say visibility may have been a factor in the accident as well as speed.
August was declared pedestrian safety month and several initiatives have taken place to raise public awareness.
