A 29-year-old man was hospitalized in serious condition Wednesday morning after the van he was driving plunged into the water of the Ala Wai Canal Wednesday morning, according to Emergency Medical Services officials.
It happened shortly before 4 a.m.
According to EMS, the driver was driving at a high rate of speed before losing control and went airborne and into the canal.
It also appears the van hit a tree before going into the water.
Police says the man told them his girlfriend is missing. A diver went into the water and did not see anyone in the vehicle.
The man was arrested for suspicion of drunken driving, driving without a license and auto theft.
Those who were in the area when the vehicle went into the canal say they heard a loud screech and then a bang.
The tow company got the van out of the water by 10:45 a.m.
