Picking produce at the supermarket -- could be tricky sometimes. But this morning we're giving you tips on how to choose correctly. Joining us this morning LIVE from a farm in Lathrop, California... Chef Jeff Anderson of the Safeway Culinary Kitchen -- and Art Perry -- of Perry and Sons Farms. Good morning. 1) - Tell us your top tips for choosing the best watermelon? First, look for a watermelon that has bright skin, is firm, symmetrical, and free of cuts. You also want to find one that feels heavy for its size. "water" melons contain more than 90% water and the ripest ones have the most water in them. 2) - Why is it a good idea to purchase locally grown produce? When you purchase locally grown produce you actually end up getting better quality produce since it doesn't take as long to travel from the farm to the store. It also helps support the local farms and the town economy which gives the farms the opportunity to potentially grow a wider variety of produce. Which means you get more options when you go to the store. 3) - Chef Jeff, tell us more about the recipes you are sharing today? First is a delicious drink called Watermelon Agua Fresca. Agua fresca is a refreshing summer beverage commonly made with fruit juices, sugar and water. This one takes watermelon and blends it together with lime juice and a bit of sugar. It's really simple and easy to make. Next we have a Watermelon Black Bean Salsa. This salsa is great for all your summer parties and get togethers. It is a great blend of cool and hot since it includes the fresh watermelon along with your typical salsa ingredients such as cilantro, black pepper, and hot sauce. Lastly we have Watermelon with Balsamic, Sea Salt and Cracked Black Pepper. This is another great party dish that is very easy to make. It also is a fun twist on watermelon as it combines the sweetness of the watermelon with the savory balsamic vinegar.
