Public school students heading back to school this morning. And that can be a lot to handle for some kids. This morning the doctor is in to talk about anxiety in kids. Joining us this morning -- Dr. Cathy Bell of Kaiser Permanente. Good morning. Getting back into the classroom is something a lot of kids dread, but how do parents know if it is something more? When does anxiety in kids become a problem? o Everyone - even children have some worries = normal o It is a problem when it interferes with daily life How can parents recognize the signs and symptoms of childhood anxiety o Differs depending on age Pre school: separation anxiety, selective muteism School- age - perfectionism or germ phobia Teens - depression, defiant behavior, failing grades Left untreated what problems can a child's anxiety cause? o Physical symptoms such as headaches or stomachaches, psychologically: depression, substance abuse and defiant behaviors as the child gets older What should parents do if they see symptoms in their children? o Talk to their child - don't belittle the fears /concerns o Help them develop coping skills o Ask for help : school counselors, pediatrician, Being bullied can be a big source of anxiety what signs and symptoms should parents look for?
