A 50-year-old man from Texas died on Sunday at Molokini Crater off of Maui during an ocean activity, according to Maui County police.
Police responded to the Kihei Boat Ramp and Maalaea Harbor at around 8:21 a.m.
Officers found that a vessel by the name of Double Scoop, operated by Scuba Shack, went to Molokini Crater.
Some of the people on the vessel entered the ocean at Molokini. However, they became distressed due to the high surf, strong winds and rain. The Coast Guard and the Maui Fire Department were called to assist in rescue efforts.
Mark Strickert from Austin, Texas was pronounced dead at the scene. A crew member, a 23-year-old woman, was hospitalized in critical condition. A 48-year-old woman was also hospitalized in good condition with abrasions.
There were three crew members and 12 passengers on the vessel.
An autopsy is scheduled for Strickert to determine the exact cause of death.
